Summer 2024 Contracts

Teachers – Summer Credits (July)

We are currently accepting applications for qualified teachers AND teacher candidates (must be currently enrolled or a recent graduate from a Bachelor of Education program) in a team teaching environment for the following summer credit course programs: (visit https://www.canadianecology.ca/highschool-credit-courses/ for course dates, offerings and more information)

  • 2-week intensive and in-residence high school credit course(s) offered during the month of July. Courses offered in grade 9-12 and in areas of Science, Biology, and Geography. Teachers arrive the Saturday prior to the start of each course for mandatory preparatory days.
  • All teachers MUST attend a mandatory teacher training session on Saturday May 18th to Sunday May 19st, 2024 (Victoria day weekend) as well as 1-2 teleconference training session (travel honorarium provided for training at the conclusion of the contract period).

Teaching positions are available from the Canadian Ecology Centre (CEC) as well as from the Near North District School Board (NNDSB). Room and Board is included in all CEC paid teaching positions but NNDSB contract teachers are required to pay a meal fee of $700 as part of their employment contract (accommodations are provided free of charge).

Duration: 2-week contracts available either Sunday June 30 to Friday July 13 OR Sunday July 15 – Friday July 26, 2024. (multiple contracts can be awarded)

Salary:

  • CEC Teacher Salary: $3000-$3500 (Qualified) / $2500 (pre-service) gross per 2-week credit (includes food and accommodations).
  • NNDSB Teacher Salary: Determined by the Board. Based on summer school hourly rates for a 110 hour course. (these positions are given priority to returning teachers to the program)

Spring/Summer 2024 Contracts

The CEC is currently looking for the following positions as part of our Canada Summer Jobs Program Funding. To be eligible, candidates must be under the age of 30.

Day Camp Coordinator (8 weeks)

The Day Camp Coordinator will report to the Programs Manager and be responsible for planning and running our 5 x 5-day summer camps at the North Bay/Mattawa Conservation Authority building on Janey Avenue in North Bay as well as 2 x 4-day camps that are run out of the Canadian Ecology Centre (see Day Camps). The ideal candidate will have previous day camp experience, have experience in planning and delivering programs, good group and time management skills, and a good understanding of environmental science, outdoor skills and forest school philosophy. Standard First Aid and CPR required as a minimum. Successful candidates must have reliable transportation to and from the camps in North Bay, a bus from North Bay to and from camp is available for the 2 weeks at the CEC. (1 position available, $19.50/hr)

 

Day Camp Counselor (up to 8 weeks)

Day camp counselors will report to the day camp coordinator helping to facilitate daily camp activities and routines. The ideal candidate will be available for all 7 day camps including a week of training at the beginning of the summer (5 weeks in North Bay and 2 weeks in Mattawa), and has experience with day camps either having attended them, or previous experience as a counselor.  Successful candidates must have reliable transportation to and from the camps in North Bay, a bus from North Bay to and from camp is available for the 2 weeks at the CEC.  (2-3 positions available, $18.00/hr)

 

BILINGUAL Outdoor Education/Science Specialist (up to 16 weeks)

Staff will help develop, plan and facilitate activities and programs focused on environmental education, nature awareness, outdoor technology (GPS) and wilderness survival skills during on-site school based programs.  Support and facilitate outdoor activities (canoeing, swimming, hiking) programs, social activities and first aid, medical/mental health and academic support during our 2-week in-residence summer school program in July and/or assist with our summer day camp programs (see above day camp posting).  Plan, facilitate, and support education programs designed for other clientele during the summer months including training opportunities, family and individual groups.  Training and/or certificates in Wilderness Advance First Aid, NLS/Bronze Cross as well as Canoe Certifications considered an asset. Room and board available as per contract (1-2 positions, $20.00/hr)

 

Short-term Summer Contracts

Candidates who are interested in working short-term contracts with our summer day camp programs (ie. 1-week only) or a 2-week session of our Credit Course In-residence Program should submit a cover letter and resume with stated availability and interest.

Certifications in Advanced Wilderness First Aid, NLS or Bronze Cross and Canoe Certifications are required for working as a recreation specialist in our 2-week summer school program.

Ongoing Positions

Housekeeping – part-time/occasional

The CEC is currently accepting resumes for part-time/occasional housekeepers. Individuals should be available to work a varied schedule including weekdays and some weekends, days only. Reliable transportation required. Accommodations not provided. Criminal record check required.

Volunteer Placements

The Canadian Ecology Centre gladly welcomes volunteers of all ages to assist with our programs and events. If you are interested in volunteering or would like to receive some volunteer hours for high school, please send us your resume and police check (Vulnerable Sector Screening) and we will be happy to speak with you. Availability depends on programming options.
