Outdoor/Environmental Educators (Spring/Summer)

The Canadian Ecology Centre is a non-profit environmental and science education and research centre located in Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park, Mattawa Ontario.  We deliver outdoor and environmental education programs to visiting schools   (K-12) and educational groups as well as youth camps, high school courses and PD opportunities for teachers. 


Spring/Summer Contracts:  The CEC is currently looking for Bilingual Outdoor Education staff for variable length contract positions (1– 4 month part-time and full-time contracts available from June to August, some part-time work may be available in May).  Room and Board available as part of contract.

Job Description:

SPRING / SUMMER (May-August) – Salary: hourly starting at $14/hr

  • Design and delivery of environmental, outdoor and recreational programs/activities for youth (K-12)/adults.
  • General administration and maintenance duties.
  • Additional summer program design and delivery for youth day camps and family programs as required.

SUMMER OVERNIGHT CAMP WEEKS (July/August) – Salary: $1000/wk (during credit courses only)

  • Responsible for developing and delivering outdoor activities and recreational programs for students      enrolled in our 2-week and 1-week Residential High School Credit Courses (i.e. Swimming, canoeing,   biking, canoe tripping, wilderness camping, etc…) in July and August.
  • Provide program support during the high school credit courses including: activity and lesson planning, group supervision, leadership support, classroom management and crisis intervention.
  • Must live on site for the duration of the program.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education in the field of or relevant/equivalent to:  Education, Environmental Studies, Adventure Leadership, Outdoor Recreation and      Tourism, etc…
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Fully Bilingualism (French/English) required for May/June contracts
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Current NLS qualifications an asset.
  • Advanced Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder Certification an asset.
  • ORCKA certification(s) or equivalent an asset.
  • Previous experience working in a camp or outdoor education facility
  • Experience in organizational games and outdoor/recreational activities an asset
  • Successful/Current Vulnerable Criminal Record Check
  • Must be able to work long hours including weeknights, weekends and some travel may be required for off-site programs.

 

Salary and Work Hours:  Based on an hourly starting rate of $14/hr (based on experience and qualifications). 

Minimum 24 to 40 hours per week (based on chunk blocks of time) during the regular spring and summer schedule (not including overnight credit course  camp sessions).  On-site accommodations are available for a small weekly fee.  Food is provided when working with an overnight educational group. 

A weekly rate paid of $1000gross/week (room and board included) during any residential summer credit course session.
