TEACHERS – Summer Credits

The Canadian Ecology Centre (CEC) is a non-profit environmental and science education and research centre located in Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park, Mattawa, Ontario.  We deliver outdoor and environmental education programs to visiting schools (K-12) and educational groups as well as youth camps, high school courses and PD opportunities for teachers.  The CEC  promotes a welcoming and safe learning environment for all students and specializes in adaptable programs for students of all learning abilities.

Summer Credit Course Teachers:  We are currently accepting applications for qualified teachers in a team teaching environment for the following programs: 

  • 2-week intensive and residential high school credit course(s) offered during the month of July
  • 1-week program offered on-site during the month of August with additional online learning modules throughout the fall (NEW)

Teaching positions are available from the Canadian Ecology Centre (CEC) as well as from the Near North District School Board (NNDSB).   Room and Board is included in all CEC paid positions.  NNDSB contract teachers are required to pay a $500 CEC meal fee as part of their employment contract (accommodations are provided free of charge)

Note:  NNDSB teaching contracts are paid at a higher wage and will be given priority to returning teaching staff and/or teachers with  extensive knowledge/experience/qualifications as required in the job description. 

All candidates who are interested in being considered for a NNDSB Position, MUST apply directly to the Summer School Job Posting with the Near North District School Board.   This posting is usually posted closer to the closing date and for a short time period.  Only those applicants who have applied to the NNDSB can qualify for a Board paid position. 

Job Description

  • Must be willing and able to live on site for the duration of the credit course.
  • 24 hour supervision of students for the duration of the course
  • Provide opportunities for experiential and outdoor learning
  • Provide alternative learning and teaching strategies to support student success and enjoyment
  • Provide opportunities for community based learning and living
  • Work collaboratively in a team teaching environment
  • Work and teach in an outdoor environment
  • For the 1-week session…must also be available throughout the fall for the completion of the on-line learning modules.

* Tentative contracts may be awarded pending adequate course enrolment numbers. 

Skills & Requirements

  • Excellent communication and written skills
  • Member in good current standing with the OCT
  • Current (within 6 months) and Original Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable sector screening required)
  • WHMIS Certificate and Current Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Experience at camp or outdoor education facilities an asset
  • Experience and qualifications in Wilderness First Aid, lifeguarding, canoeing, organizational games and outdoor activities considered an asset. 
  • All New and Returning teachers MUST attend a mandatory teacher training session on Saturday May 20th to Monday May 22nd, 2017 (Victoria day weekend). Some exemptions may be made for returning teachers only who are working abroad.

CEC Teacher Salary:  $2850 gross per 2-week credit (includes food and accommodations).  1 week session salary TBD.

NNDSB Teacher Salary:  Determined by the Board.  Based on summer school hourly rates for a 110 hour course.
