OWLS Lesson Plans

Lessons we have used in our OWLS programs

Pond Math: Catch, Count & Compare
JK – Grade 1

Dive into hands-on fun with three engaging pond stations! Students become scientists and anglers as they “fish” for species to sort by size, discover life cycles from egg to adult, and match numbers to ten frames with frogs and turtles. This interactive activity blends science, math, and teamwork, while sparking curiosity about the animals that call our ponds home.

Measuring Up: Math in the Wild
Grades 3 – 6

Students become outdoor mathematicians as they explore measurements in the natural world. Working in teams, they use sticks, stones, and leaves to create shapes with specific areas, then design and test balance contraptions to compare the weight of natural objects. Blending math, problem-solving, and creativity, this lesson challenges learners to think critically, build collaboratively, and discover how measurement connects to the world around them.

Sheltered by Nature
Grade 3-6

Students step into the role of engineers and builders as they design and construct small-scale shelters using only natural materials. Inspired by the traditional knowledge of First Nations and Inuit peoples, this hands-on activity blends science, social studies, and teamwork while encouraging reflection on what makes a structure strong, comfortable, and sustainable — then and now.

Wild Beats: Exploring Sound in Nature
Grades 2-6

Students transform the outdoors into a concert hall as they discover how natural objects can become instruments. Through rhythm games, tempo challenges, and group performances, learners create music while exploring the science of sound and vibration. This creative, hands-on lesson blends arts, science, and outdoor play — showing that music truly is all around us.

Mandalas in Nature
Grades 1-6

Discover the art and math of nature with mandalas! Students will explore patterns, symmetry and design by creating circular artworks from leaves, stones, flowers, and other natural treasures. This hands-on outdoor activity blends creativity, mindfulness, and mathematical thinking while connecting to global and Indigenous traditions of circular design. Perfect for fostering observation, cooperation, and a deeper connection to the natural world
